But it was incredibly inaccurate, a lot of graphical special effects weren't emulated, and the sound was never quite right. That was hella impressive considering the main Genesis CPU ran at 7mhz and had a second 4mhz Z80 as well. Like one of the most famous early emulators was one called Genecyst, which could emulate a Genesis (MegaDrive) at nearly full speed on a mid-range 386 running around 16-20mhz. But a lot of emulators use tricks and hacks and compromises to reduce the processor requirements, sacrificing compatibility and/or timing accuracy to do so. Machine-perfect emulation really does require a shitload of processing power, pretty much unavoidably.
