Like one of the most famous early emulators was one called Genecyst, which could emulate a Genesis (MegaDrive) at nearly full speed on a mid-range 386 running around 16-20mhz. But a lot of emulators use tricks and hacks and compromises to reduce the processor requirements, sacrificing compatibility and/or timing accuracy to do so.
